Formed in the summer of 2017 by vocalist Chris Colaianni and guitarist Robby Versace, Jesus Wept began as a side project before rapidly developing into a primary creative outlet. Bassist Nate Barnes and drummer Cody “Larz” McCoy joined early in the band’s existence, having played alongside Colaianni in another project. Following that band’s dissolution, Jesus Wept committed fully to its own trajectory, issuing its debut EP, Crushing Apartheid, in August 2017. The release established the band’s foundation: uncompromising death metal rooted in crushing physicality and a distinctly dark and confrontational aesthetic.

The momentum generated by Crushing Apartheid was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, but the ensuing period ultimately gave the band an opportunity to refine and expand its early work. In 2020, the original EP was remixed and reissued as Apartheid Redux under the Redefining Darkness banner, augmented by two new compositions and a cover of W.A.S.P.’s “Animal (Fuck Like a Beast).” Jesus Wept continued its evolution with Psychedelic Degeneracy in 2022, followed by a 2023 split release with Trocar through a collaboration with Night Shift Merch. Both EPs garnered positive critical attention, while the band’s live profile continued to grow through performances alongside acts including Exodus, Demilich, Cryptopsy, Blood Incantation, Vital Remains, and Unto Others. Jesus Wept also appeared at Metal Injection Fest 2024 and Heavy Hell III, further establishing the band as a formidable presence within contemporary death metal. In 2024, guitarist Noah Polston joined the lineup, accelerating the band’s creative momentum and setting the stage for its most substantial undertaking yet.

The result is Perverse Inversion, Jesus Wept’s debut full-length and the definitive expression of the band’s nearly decade-long evolution. Tracked in May 2026 with Andy Nelson at Bricktop Studios and mixed by Kurt Ballou, the album represents a decisive expansion of the band’s sonic and technical vocabulary without compromising its brutality. Darker, more ambitious, and more unrestrained than anything that preceded it, Perverse Inversion finds Jesus Wept operating at its most lethal.
